February Permablitz Report
By Annelie Roux

From time to time we like to tackle community projects and for our February Permablitz, we were invited to design and implement a sensory garden and therapeutic playground for the therapy centre of the Kivotos Foundation for Children with Special Needs. This project is being developed on 2 of 4 sections at the front of the therapy centre and is part of a larger project namely the Kivotos Foundation Garden Project Paphos (see for more info). To keep costs down and to keep the project eco-friendly the design makes use of a lot of natural, up-cycled and recycled elements, perfectly in line with our Ethics of people care, earth care and fair share 🙂

We had a great day with people from all over the island coming to learn and play together. While local artists cooperated in designing and painting the outline of the large mural others got to work carefully uprooting the not so child friendly rose bushes (with participants encouraged to adopt any they chose). Once the area was cleared a number of sensory installations could be installed. A climbing dome was erected using old car tires and a sensory raised bed was constructed. This and other beds will be planted with attractive, edible, touchable, fragrant plants to delight all the senses. The permaculture kids were able to participate and helped with creating a sensory curtain from recycled items, painted stones for decoration and also made mosaic elements for a lovely mural that will form a backdrop for the garden. For more photographs you can view the album here:

This is an ongoing project and if anyone would like to contribute resources, make a donation or take part in one of the follow up sessions to complete the work please contact our Permaculture Association member Annelie on 99714325 or contact Laurence, the project leader, via the facebook page.
Next Permablitz: 27th of March in Parekklisia near Limassol

Our next permablitz will take place in Parekklisia (Limassol) on the 27th of March. The theme of this blitz is initiating a food forest from bare, rocky wilderness. A food forest is a self-sustaining eco system that provides us with a great variety of edible plants, promotes biodiversity and preserves the local flora and fauna at the same time. This time we will be planting, cutting down dead trees, promoting soil fertility by introducing mycelia and so on. So grab your working boots and gardening gloves and join us!
For more information (such as a list of things to bring along) or to join contact Petros on 99826496 or join the event ( ) and our Cyprus Permablitz facebook group

Permaculture Association Cyprus Logo Competition

We would like to design a logo that will represent our Association and will reflect the essence of Permaculture while at the same time adding a Cypriot flavour to it. We are calling for conceptual ideas (it does not need to be a perfect finished artwork) that we can work from to design such a logo. So you don’t need to be artistic, as long as you can put your ideas across we can work with an artist to fine tune and stylize it. We may even end up combining more than one concept. By submitting your logo you give the committee the full rights to use it and change it at our discretion. If your design is chosen you can win a lovely section of permaculture plants suited to our Cypriot climate. So get your creative caps on and start designing. Entries must be in by the end of April. You can email them to or submit them to us at the March or April permablitz.
